How to read a Jeep VIN
- The 2023 Wrangler manual places the VIN at the left front corner of the A-pillar, visible through the windshield. Other Jeeps, such as the 2026 Grand Cherokee, use a label on the left front corner of the instrument panel pad. Source
- Stellantis (FCA US) uses position 4 on Jeep SUVs and trucks for the restraint equipment and GVWR band. For example, R means active belts, air bags and side bags in all rows on a 6,001-7,000 lb vehicle. Source
- Positions 5 to 7 together code brand, model name, drive wheels, brake system, body type, drive position and price series. In the 2027 guide every Jeep code starts with J (e.g. 1C4RJX... Wrangler, 1C6RJT... Gladiator). Source
- In the 2027 filing, Jeeps use WMIs 1C4 (FCA US, SUV), 1C6 (FCA US, truck: Gladiator) and 3C4 (FCA Mexico, SUV: Compass and Cherokee). Older Jeeps used others, listed below. Source
- Position 11 plant codes for 2027 Jeeps: W = Toledo North (Wrangler), L = Toledo Supplier Park (Gladiator), C = Jefferson North and 8 = Mack Assembly, Detroit (Grand Cherokee), S = Warren Truck (Grand Wagoneer), T = Toluca, Mexico (Compass, Cherokee). Source
- Jeep's door certification label also carries a Month-Day-Hour (MDH) number giving the month, day and hour of manufacture. The bar code at the bottom of the label is the VIN. Source
