How to read a Chevrolet VIN
- In GM's NHTSA VIN filing, GM gives position 4 different meanings by vehicle type. On passenger cars such as the Corvette it is the vehicle line; on trucks and SUVs it codes GVWR, brake system and body style. Source
- Position 5 is the series (trim) on cars, but the chassis or drivetrain (2WD/4WD) on trucks and SUVs. Position 6 is the body style on cars and the series (trim) on trucks. Source
- In the same filing, position 7 is a letter coding the restraint system. Position 8 is the engine code. Source
- GM's filing defines plant codes per product line. Examples: 5 = Bowling Green (Corvette), and on the Silverado 1500, Z = Fort Wayne and G = Silao, Mexico. The same letter can mean a different plant on another line (Z is also Spring Hill on the Cadillac LYRIQ). Source
- GM vehicles list their factory option codes (RPO codes) on a Service Parts Identification Label. That label is separate from the VIN and is often the quickest way to confirm original equipment. Source
